PH logs 4,734 new COVID-19 cases, B.1.617 variant confirmed

The Philippines logged 4,734 new COVID-19 infections on Tuesday, May 11, 2021, bringing the national total to 1,113,547.

The number of active cases has decreased to 56,752, with 93.4% being mild, 2.2% asymptomatic, 1.8% severe, and 1.4% critical.

A total of 7,837 new recoveries were reported, increasing the overall recovery count to 1,038,175.

The country's death toll from COVID-19 reached 18,620 with the addition of 59 new fatalities.

Following data validation, 13 duplicates were removed from the total count and 19 recoveries were reclassified as deaths.

Nationwide, 60% of intensive care unit beds are utilized, and 41% of mechanical ventilators are in use.

In the National Capital Region, 67% of ICU beds are utilized, and 49% of its ventilators are in use.

The Philippines has confirmed the detection of the B.1.617 coronavirus variant, first discovered in India, which the WHO has classified as a 'variant of concern'.
