Pfizer, AstraZeneca vaccines highly effective vs Delta variant with two doses

Two doses of Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines are highly effective against the Delta variant, according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The study found that two doses of Pfizer were 93.7 percent effective against symptomatic infections from the alpha variant and 88 percent effective against the delta variant.

Two doses of AstraZeneca were 74.5 percent effective against alpha infections and 67 percent effective against delta.

Receiving only one dose of either vaccine significantly reduces effectiveness against the Delta variant to about 30 percent.

The Delta variant is more transmissible than the Alpha variant, with one infected individual potentially infecting up to eight people compared to four to five for Alpha.

Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque urged the public to complete their vaccination series.
