PCG spox urges voters to reject pro-China bets

Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, Commodore Jay Tarriela, urged Filipino voters to reject candidates who are "pro-China" and instead elect those who prioritize the country's sovereignty and maritime rights in the upcoming May 2025 elections.

Tarriela emphasized that the West Philippine Sea (WPS) issue is not political but a concern for all Filipinos, regardless of political affiliations.

He warned that electing pro-China officials could hinder the modernization of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the PCG's capability acquisition due to potential budget obstructions.

The PCG spokesperson clarified he is not endorsing any specific candidate or party but stressed the importance of voters supporting those who uphold the Philippines' claims in the disputed waters.

Tarriela also cautioned against candidates who merely pretend to support the WPS issue for political gain, contrasting them with those who have previously sided with China.
