The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and Japan Coast Guard (JCG) are strengthening their maritime partnership and capacity-building programs.
Japan has committed to providing five 97-meter multi-role response vessels (MRRVs) to the PCG, with the first expected to arrive by 2027.
The BRP Teresa Magbanua, one of two patrol vessels donated by Japan and delivered in 2022, was inspected by Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru during his visit to the PCG on April 30.
Prime Minister Ishiba also observed training exercises led by members of Japan's Coast Guard Mobile Cooperation Team, who have been working with the PCG.
These efforts, including the provision of vessels and technical cooperation, are part of Japan's broader initiative to support maritime security in the region.
PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan stated that these additional vessels will enhance the coast guard's performance in the country's exclusive economic zones (EEZs).
Prime Minister Ishiba's visit also included a meeting with Philippine President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., where they discussed strengthening defense, security, and economic cooperation.
