PBBM orders DFA to ensure OFW safety in Taiwan

President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. has ordered the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to ensure the safety and welfare of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Taiwan.

No Filipino in Taiwan is currently seeking government assistance for repatriation amid rising cross-strait tensions.

DFA Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega assured that contingency plans are in place for areas with a high concentration of Filipino workers, including Taiwan.

These plans have been in place for a long time and are detailed in documents held by the Manila Economic Cultural Office and labor offices.

The DFA reiterated its stance of being friendly to all nations and conducting foreign relations based on mutual respect and international law.

The Chinese Embassy later clarified that Ambassador Huang Xilian's statements were misquoted, misunderstood, or taken out of context.

Ambassador Huang had previously linked the safety of OFWs in Taiwan to the Philippines' hosting of new EDCA sites and advised the Philippines to oppose 'Taiwan independence'.
