Authorities at General Santos International Airport successfully intercepted six boxes holding 278 wild spiders, preventing their distribution across various Philippine cities.
The interception was a collaborative effort between the Philippine National Police Aviation Security Group (PNP AVSEGROUP) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
The spiders belong to the genus Neoscona, commonly known as barn spiders or spotted orb-weavers.
The shipper intended to send the spiders to multiple locations, including Tarlac City, Lipa City, Ibaan in Batangas, Valenzuela City, and Carmona in Cavite.
The seized spiders are currently under the care of the DENR's Community Environment and Natural Resources Office in General Santos for proper handling.
Police noted this is not the first case of wildlife smuggling detected at airports, and coordination with environment authorities will continue to curb the trade.
