Over 200,000 OFWs repatriated due to pandemic

More than 200,000 Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) have been sent home by the government as of September 13 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) had previously reported repatriating over 174,000 Filipinos since February 2020.

This week alone, 9,671 Filipinos were brought home, with over 7,500 coming from the Middle East.

The majority of repatriated individuals are land-based, while a significant number are sea-based.

Around 80,000 more OFWs are expected to come home within the year.

The fifth batch of repatriates from Sabah, consisting of 400 individuals, is scheduled to arrive on September 21.

There are still 3,000 Filipinos in Sabah awaiting assistance to return home.

Repatriates from Sabah will undergo a mandatory 14-day quarantine in Zamboanga City before returning to their home provinces.
