One dead, five hurt in Basilan polling station shooting

One voter was killed and five others were injured when unidentified gunmen opened fire on a group of people leaving a polling station in Tabuan Lasa, Basilan on Monday afternoon.

The fatality was identified as Ricardo Fabian, 52, who died instantly at the scene.

The wounded individuals were Andy Reyes Jr., 29, Narrudin Gadjali, 29, Alnasri Jammang, 29, Bol Madjalis, 48, and Hakim Munib, 38.

The incident occurred around 2 p.m. as the victims were exiting the polling center in Barangay Tong-Umus, Tapiantana Island.

The suspects reportedly hid in nearby houses and fled the area before authorities arrived.

A police report stated that unidentified armed men fired at the victims who were on the shoreline.

The shooting incident occurred after the visit of the Philippine National Police Provincial Director P/Col. Pedro Martirez Jr. in the area.

Authorities are investigating the incident and have not formally linked it to the presence of Muktar Junaid, husband of Tabuan-Lasa Mayor Brenda Junaid, who was in the area when the shooting happened.
