ROV Hakuyo finds sunken M/T Princess Empress, oil spill continues to spread

A Japanese remotely-operated vehicle (ROV), Hakuyo, has located the sunken M/T Princess Empress approximately 7.7 nautical miles from Balingawan Point in Naujan town.

Images from the ROV revealed cracks on the ship's surface, but the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) chief stated that the ROV Hakuyo is not capable of plugging or siphoning the oil.

The PCG indicated that another vessel from Singapore may need to be contracted by the shipowner to address the oil leak.

As of March 22, the oil spill has reached two barangays in Batangas City, in addition to affecting 69 barangays in Oriental Mindoro and Palawan, and three in Antique.

A total of 163,508 individuals or 34,555 families in Mimaropa and Western Visayas have been affected by the oil spill.

Cleanup operations have collected 6,803 liters of oily water mixture, 1,898 sacks of contaminated debris, and 164 drums of waste.

The NDRRMC has reported that P28.3 million worth of humanitarian assistance has been provided to affected families.
