Netflix celebrates kontrabida roles with star-studded ball

Netflix celebrated the premiere of its new film "Kontrabida Academy" with a star-studded ball at The Peninsula Manila, honoring both legendary and new actors who portray on-screen villains.

The movie, directed by Chris Martinez and released on Netflix on September 11, tells the story of Gigi, a restaurant worker who finds herself in a school for villains, played by Barbie Forteza.

Eugene Domingo, who plays Mauricia, a star-actress with expertise in villain roles, expressed excitement about actors who take on kontrabida roles, calling it courageous and fun.

The grand ball brought together iconic kontrabidas such as Celia Rodriguez, Odette Khan, and Rez Cortez, alongside newer talents.

Veteran actress Celia Rodriguez fondly remembered the late Cherie Gil, calling her the "undisputed queen of kontrabidas" and suggesting she would have been a part of the film.

Cherie Gil's brother, Michael de Mesa, expressed gratitude for the film's tribute to her memory, acknowledging her significant impact on Philippine cinema.
