Negros Occidental declares state of calamity due to storm, insect outbreak

Negros Occidental has declared a state of calamity due to the severe effects of tropical cyclone Crising and an outbreak of the red-striped soft scale insect (RSSI) affecting sugarcane farms.

The declaration was approved by Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson on Thursday, following a resolution passed by the Provincial Board.

The simultaneous occurrence of these natural and biological calamities has caused massive agricultural losses, endangering food security, employment, and economic stability.

Tropical Storm Crising and the enhanced southwest monsoon caused heavy rainfall, leading to displacement of families and disruption of livelihood.

A total of 21 local government units, comprising 184 barangays and 35,312 families, were severely affected with extensive damage to agriculture, infrastructure, and local economies.

The RSSI outbreak has rapidly infested 2,876.28 hectares of sugarcane plantations, affecting 1,574 farmers across 112 barangays.
