The provincial government of Negros Occidental has earmarked an initial PHP10 million for its "Benteng Bigas Meron Na!" (BBM Na!) program, which aims to sell rice at PHP20 per kilogram.
Provincial Administrator Rayfrando Diaz II stated that the PHP10 million would be replenished as needed to support the initiative.
The province is collaborating with the Department of Agriculture (DA) and local irrigators' associations to source the rice.
DA-Negros Island Region Director Jose Albert Barrogo announced that subsidized rice will be available to senior citizens, persons with disabilities, indigent residents, and 4Ps beneficiaries.
Each eligible family will be limited to purchasing a maximum of 10 kilograms of P20 rice per week.
The program, which previously saw the province allocating PHP7 million to purchase rice from the NFA and PHP3 million for irrigators' associations, aims to further reduce the price from the current PHP25 per kilogram offered by some associations.
