Top NPA leader Myrna Sularte killed in Butuan clash

Myrna Sularte, a high-ranking New People's Army (NPA) leader in the Caraga Region and spokesperson of the National Democratic Front (NDF) in Eastern Mindanao, was killed in a clash with government troops in Butuan City on Wednesday, February 12.

She was identified by former NPA rebels as the secretary for the NPA's Northeastern Mindanao Regional Committee and a member of the political bureau of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP).

National Security Adviser Eduardo Año stated that Sularte's neutralization was a decisive blow against communist insurgents and a major victory for peace and security.

The military stated that Sularte had a P5.6-million bounty on her head.

Army chief Lt. Gen. Roy Galido described Solarte's death as a mark of a new era and a beacon of hope for lasting peace.

Sularte faced multiple criminal charges, including rebellion, aggravated arson, robbery with double homicide, kidnapping, and murder.

Her siblings arrived to claim her remains and are coordinating arrangements for her burial.

She succeeded her husband, Jorge Madlos, alias Ka Oris, who was killed in Bukidnon in October 2021.
