NAPOLCOM launches motu proprio probe on police sergeant
The National Police Commission (Napolcom) has ordered a motu proprio investigation into a police chief master sergeant from the Eastern Police District (EPD) after a viral video showed him violating traffic laws.
Napolcom Commissioner Rafael Calinisan directed the agency's Inspection, Monitoring and Investigation Service (IMIS) to initiate administrative proceedings against the officer.
The officer was seen in the video, while in police uniform, recklessly swerving on a bike lane, riding without a helmet, and committing other traffic violations.
The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has already suspended the policeman's driver's license for 90 days and placed his motorcycle under alarm.
The LTO also summoned the officer and the motorcycle's registered owner to explain why their licenses should not be permanently revoked.
Commissioner Calinisan emphasized that no one, especially law enforcers, is above the law and that police officers must set an example by strictly adhering to the laws they are mandated to enforce.
