Most OFWs opt not to be repatriated amid COVID-19

Majority of over 351,000 Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) affected by the COVID-19 pandemic have opted not to be repatriated, preferring to remain in their host countries.

Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III stated that out of 351,161 displaced OFWs, approximately 200,000 have chosen to stay, particularly in the Americas and Europe.

He also mentioned that of the 42,000 OFWs initially expected to return by the end of May and June, only 16,679 could be repatriated due to incomplete documentation like exit visas.

Of the total displaced workers, 2,390 were recorded to have been affected by COVID-19, with 72 deaths, 678 recoveries, and 1,678 active cases.
