MMDA asst sec challenges rep to tell NPA to surrender

Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Assistant Secretary Celine Pialago challenged Kabataan party-list Rep. Sarah Elago to urge the New People's Army (NPA) to surrender instead of echoing Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) chief Jose Maria Sison's calls for peace talks.

Pialago, also the spokesperson for the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) on public affairs and youth concerns, dismissed Elago's calls for resuming peace talks as a mere "smokescreen" and "damage control."

The NTF-ELCAC official's statement came after the death of Kieth Absalon, 21, and his cousin Nolven, 40, in an anti-personnel mine attack by the NPA in Masbate.

The NPA has claimed responsibility for the attack, although other reports suggest the Absalon cousins were shot at close range after the mine explosion.
