Palace warns of return to MECQ if COVID-19 cases continue to rise in NCR
Metro Manila will remain under general community quarantine (GCQ) after President Rodrigo Duterte decided against placing it under modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ).
Cebu City, however, will be placed under MECQ as the country continues to grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic.
Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque stated that while Duterte initially agreed with experts recommending MECQ for Metro Manila, Metro Manila mayors appealed the decision.
The mayors promised to intensify localized lockdowns, enhance testing, tracing, and treatment efforts, and more broadly enforce GCQ restrictions.
Duterte agreed to keep Metro Manila under GCQ for the next two weeks, with the caveat that it could revert to MECQ if the spread of COVID-19 is not slowed down.
