Metro Manila's upcoming Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) from August 6 to 20 is projected to cost the economy PHP105 billion weekly.
Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Karl Kendrick Chua stated that this ECQ period could result in up to 444,000 more people losing their jobs and an increase of up to 177,000 poor individuals.
Chua suggested that accelerating vaccination efforts in high-risk areas during the weeks leading up to and following the ECQ could help reverse these negative economic effects.
He added that the ECQ could be viewed as an investment to pave the way for economic recovery once the spread of the Delta variant is controlled.
The decision for the stricter ECQ follows a week of general community quarantine (GCQ) with heightened and additional restrictions.
Department of Trade and Industry Secretary Ramon Lopez previously emphasized the importance of allowing key sectors to continue operating during the ECQ to preserve jobs and income.
