The COVID-19 case fatality rate in Metro Manila has increased to 5.36% in the past two weeks, significantly higher than the 1.82% recorded since March 1, 2020, according to OCTA Research.
OCTA estimates that the overwhelmed healthcare system and the presence of more lethal coronavirus variants could be reasons for this increase.
The fatality rate for persons aged 65 and above has risen from 11.8% to 28.6% in the period after March 28, 2021.
There have also been increases in fatality rates for those aged 60-64 (from 5.7% to 16.4%) and 50-59 (from 2.7% to 8.7%).
Due to these significant increases in case fatality rates across age groups, OCTA has recommended prioritizing senior citizens for hospital care.
The Department of Health previously reported a record-high 401 new COVID-19 fatalities on April 9.
Metro Manila and adjacent provinces were placed under a modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) from April 12 to April 30 in response to the surge.
