LCEs need IATF approval for lockdowns

Local chief executives (LCEs) in the Philippines can no longer impose their own lockdowns without the explicit approval of the national government's Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) on COVID-19.

DILG Secretary Eduardo Año clarified this directive following the extension of the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in several areas, including Metro Manila, until May 15.

Previously, local officials had the authority to declare lockdowns within their jurisdictions in coordination with the DILG.

Secretary Año warned that any unilateral declaration of lockdowns by local government units (LGUs) would disqualify them from receiving financial aid from the national government.

Areas under ECQ until May 15 include Metro Manila, Southern Tagalog, Central Luzon, Mindoro island, Pangasinan, Benguet, Catanduanes, Albay, Antique, Iloilo, Aklan, Capiz, Cebu, Davao del Norte, Davao de Oro, and Davao City.
