Lawmakers push for Edcom 2 extension to ensure policy impact

Lawmakers and education agencies are advocating for the extension of the Second Congressional Commission on Education (Edcom 2), which is set to expire by the end of the year.

Senators Loren Legarda and Risa Hontiveros have filed Senate Bills 529 and 1418, respectively, in their chamber, while similar bills have been filed in the House of Representatives.

The Edcom 2's mandate is to conduct research, propose policy recommendations, and legislative measures to address learning challenges across all education levels.

While confident in completing their studies, the commission's executive director, Dr. Mark Karol Yee, noted that the intended impact of their recommendations may take time to materialize.

He explained that the process of completing the bills into law, oversight in implementation, and strategic resourcing are crucial steps that still need to happen to ensure the faithful completion of policy recommendations.
