Labor groups want Baguio Mayor Magalong to resign over ICI appointment

Labor groups are calling for Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong to resign, citing constitutional provisions prohibiting elective officials from accepting appointments to other government positions.

Magalong was appointed by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. as a special adviser and investigator to the Independent Commission on Infrastructure (ICI), an independent body investigating corruption in government infrastructure projects.

He clarified that he will not serve as a formal member of the ICI but will assist by submitting documents and evidence he independently gathers.

Magalong has denied resigning as mayor, stating that his role in the commission will not affect his mandate and that his priority remains with the people of Baguio.

President Marcos Jr. defended his decision to appoint Magalong, citing a detailed report Magalong presented to him during a visit to Baguio.

The newly created ICI is headed by former Supreme Court Justice Andres Reyes and includes former DPWH Secretary Rogelio Singson and Rossana Fajardo.
