House panel wants tax filing deadline extended to May 4

The House of Representatives' ways and means committee has proposed extending the April 15 tax filing deadline to May 4 to ease the burden on taxpayers during the Covid-19 crisis.

The committee also recommended that the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) waive penalties for late tax filings.

Albay Rep. Joey Salceda, committee chair, stated that the Commissioner of Internal Revenue has the authority to grant exceptions to the deadline in meritorious cases, as stipulated in the tax code.

Salceda highlighted that the Large Taxpayer Service already mandates electronic filing, which represents a significant portion of the BIR's revenue, and stressed the need for a user-friendly experience for individual and small taxpayers using the system.

The committee suggested that the BIR leverage its electronic filing and payment system to minimize face-to-face interactions and urged the BIR to fully implement the electronic payment system to comply with social distancing policies.
