House honors Alex Eala for US Open juniors title win

The House of Representatives honored tennis player Alex Eala for winning the 2022 US Open juniors division singles title, passing House Resolution 362 to commend her as the first Filipino to win a Junior Grand Slam singles title.

She is also the first Filipino to win multiple junior Grand Slam doubles titles, the youngest Filipino to win an International Tennis Federation pro singles title, and the highest-ranked Filipina player in pro circuit history.

Lawmakers highlighted Eala's achievement as one of the greatest in Philippine sports history and a source of honor for the country.

The Senate had previously congratulated Eala on her historic win.

Eala expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support of Filipino fans who watched her matches, noting their general passion for basketball and volleyball.

She believes it's a positive development that Filipinos are beginning to appreciate other sports where Filipinos excel, encouraging attention for all athletes.

The 17-year-old joins other athletes like EJ Obiena and Hidilyn Diaz in bringing honor to the Philippines through their international achievements.

Eala dominated the US Open, winning six straight matches without dropping a set, and defeating three higher-ranked players, including the second seed in the finals.
