Govt, LGUs clash over resumption of domestic flights

The Philippine government is considering the resumption of domestic flights, but is facing resistance from some local government units (LGUs) concerned about the potential spread of COVID-19.

Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque stated that the issue needs to be resolved, as LGUs are refusing to accept passengers arriving via domestic flights.

Chief Implementer Carlito Galvez Jr. confirmed that the Department of Transportation (DOTr) has submitted a proposal for the resumption of local flights, which will be discussed with LGUs.

Galvez explained that LGUs are apprehensive about an increase in imported cases due to open travel.

The government plans to consult with Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana, Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade, and Interior and Local Government Secretary Eduardo Año to determine which areas can reopen for flights.

Some airports, like Clark, may reopen this week after acquiring testing facilities, with Cebu, Davao, and General Santos cities also being considered for flight resumption.

Currently, the government permits flight operations for inbound overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and seafarers, having increased the daily entry quota to accommodate more arrivals.

The government anticipates the arrival of 42,000 OFWs this month.

The potential resumption of domestic flights is part of the government's efforts to reboot the economy by relaxing restrictions under the general community quarantine.
