Retired Lt. Gen. Santos Jr. set to surrender over P6.7-B drug bust case

Retired Lt. Gen. Benjamin Santos Jr. is reportedly in talks to return to the Philippines and surrender regarding the mishandling of a P6.7-billion drug bust case in October 2022.

CIDG chief Brig. Gen. Nicolas Torre III confirmed that surrender feelers have been made and that Santos Jr.'s return and posting of bail are being formalized.

A Manila court had previously ordered the arrest of 29 police officers for bungling drug cases, a bailable offense with bail set at P200,000.

The court, however, exonerated Santos Jr. of the non-bailable offense of planting evidence.

Santos Jr. is among the retired and active PNP officers ordered arrested by the Manila Regional Trial Court Branch 44.

Torre stated that the PNP would assist Santos Jr. in posting bail upon his arrival, as it is his right since the offense is bailable.

Currently, only eight of the 29 police officers initially sought by authorities remain at large, while former Drug Enforcement Group chief Brig. Gen. Narciso Domingo remains in hiding.
