Three overloaded trucks cause Piggatan Bridge collapse in Cagayan

The Piggatan Bridge in Alcala, Cagayan collapsed on Monday afternoon, October 6, likely due to three overloaded trucks exceeding its 18-ton capacity.

Two of the trucks were carrying rice, while the third was loaded with steel, according to Cagayan Governor Edgar Aglipay.

The collapse occurred around 5 p.m. while the trucks were crossing the bridge, a vital link to downstream towns.

Drivers and helpers aboard the trucks sustained injuries, and they are now in the custody of the Philippine National Police.

The 74.7-meter steel bridge, built in 1974, was inspected in October 2024 and found to be in good overall condition.

Governor Aglipay called for an immediate restoration plan for the bridge, noting its importance for the upcoming harvest season and ordering a rerouting plan for goods.

This is the second bridge collapse in Cagayan Valley recently, following the fall of the Cabagan-Santa Maria Bridge in Isabela.
