DPWH to fund Piggatan Bridge reconstruction after collapse injured 7

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will fund the immediate reconstruction of the Piggatan Bridge in Alcala, Cagayan, which collapsed recently.

DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon stated that funds for the reconstruction will be sourced from either the current year's budget or the 2026 budget, and a temporary bridge will be prioritized to restore connectivity.

The Piggatan Bridge, built in 1980, was last retrofitted in 2016 with a budget of only P11.7 million.

The bridge gave way under the weight of overloaded trucks, each estimated at around 50 tons, far exceeding its 18-ton capacity.

At least seven people were injured in the incident, and the Cagayan Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office confirmed the bridge is beyond repair.

Cagayan Governor Edgar Aglipay apologized for overlooking the bridge's condition.
