Jed Patrick Mabilog surrenders to NBI upon return to PH

Former Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog returned to the Philippines on September 10, 2024, after nearly seven years, surrendering to National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) operatives upon arrival at NAIA Terminal 3.

Mabilog stated his return was prompted by a renewed trust in the government's commitment to due process and fairness.

He had been linked to illegal drugs by former President Rodrigo Duterte and fled to Canada in 2017, later seeking asylum in the United States.

Mabilog posted bail for graft charges before the Sandiganbayan and secured release orders from the court on the same day of his return.

He faces charges for alleged violations of the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act and the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees.

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla suggested Mabilog's return might be to relaunch his political career and expressed the DOJ's willingness to hear his side of the story.

Mabilog's legal counsel stated that the former mayor is currently evaluating his legal remedies and will refrain from making public statements.
