Filipino survivor rescued off Japan coast

Jay-Nel Rosales, a Filipino crew member of the capsized cattle ship Gulf Livestock 1, has been rescued off the coast of Japan.

Rosales, who had lost hope of being found, is the second Filipino survivor after Captain Sareno Edvarodo was rescued.

He recounted surviving by clinging to a cow before finding a life raft.

Both rescued Filipinos are in contact with their families.

The ship, en route from New Zealand to China, had a crew of 43, including 39 Filipinos.

A fourth individual, believed to be Filipino, was found deceased.

The rescue operation was temporarily halted due to Typhoon Kristine but is expected to resume.

The DFA confirmed the rescued Filipino crewman was conscious and able to walk.
