Filipina seafarer dies by suicide on cruise ship

A 28-year-old Filipina seafarer, Mariah Jocson, died by suicide in her cabin onboard the Harmony of the Seas cruise ship while awaiting repatriation to the Philippines.

The cruise ship had docked in Barbados on May 27 and police are investigating Jocson's death.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin, Jr. announced the death via Twitter, noting that repatriation flights to the Philippines had been suspended again.

This is the second reported suicide among overseas Filipinos during the COVID-19 pandemic, following a similar incident in Beirut in May.

Secretary Locsin emphasized that Filipino resilience should not be tested to its breaking point, reminding everyone that they are human beings, not made of rubber.
