Escudero, Sotto clash over Cha-cha proposal

Senate President Francis Escudero criticized Senate Minority Leader Vicente Sotto III for supporting Charter change (Cha-cha) through a Constituent Assembly.

Escudero questioned Sotto's stance, linking it to Sotto's alleged support for the House of Representatives' impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte, which the Supreme Court ruled unconstitutional.

In an X post, Escudero asked why Sotto would now support Cha-cha, which he believes is being pushed by the House led by Speaker Martin Romualdez.

Escudero used the hashtag "#TheSenateIsNotYourPlayground" to express his sentiments.

Sotto clarified that he would consider supporting a Constituent Assembly or Constitutional Convention to amend the 1987 Constitution, particularly its impeachment provisions, if the Supreme Court's ruling makes them impossible to meet.
