Escudero camp explains P30M campaign donation to Comelec

Senator Chiz Escudero's legal counsel has filed a manifestation and entry of appearance with the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to explain a P30-million campaign donation.

The donation was reportedly from government contractor Lawrence Lubiano, president of Centerways Construction and Development Inc.

Escudero's lawyer, Ramon Esguerra, stated that the donation was legal, fully declared, follows long-standing practice, and came from Lubiano's personal money, not government contracts.

Comelec Chairperson George Garcia confirmed receipt of the submission and mentioned that Lubiano's lawyer had previously attended a hearing and submitted documents.

Article 11 of the Omnibus Election Code prohibits contributions from individuals or entities holding government contracts.

The poll body had previously issued a show-cause order requiring Escudero to clarify the origin of the campaign contribution.
