Duterte to decide on nurses' deployment abroad

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) is awaiting President Duterte's final approval for the overseas deployment of medical workers, particularly nurses who met their requirements by August 31.

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) proposed this exemption, which DOLE Secretary Silvestre Bello III favorably endorsed to the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID).

The IATF-EID has approved the recommendation, and it has now been forwarded to President Duterte for his ultimate decision.

Secretary Bello indicated that the number of medical workers expected to be deployed abroad is relatively small, estimating around 1,200 at most.

He noted that the actual number of deployed workers has historically been lower than initial expectations.

In a separate development, DOLE anticipates the repatriation of approximately 100,000 more Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs).
