Duterte apologizes for NCR Plus MECQ extension

President Rodrigo Duterte apologized for extending the modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) in the NCR Plus bubble until May 14.

The NCR Plus includes Metro Manila, Bulacan, Rizal, Cavite, and Laguna.

Duterte stated the extension was necessary due to rising COVID-19 cases and overwhelmed hospitals.

He mentioned that medical professionals, including Health Secretary Francisco Duque III, recommended the extension.

The President quoted the advice as 'necessary' because infections have spiked and hospitals are occupied.

He urged the public to understand that the pandemic remains a national crisis requiring continuous efforts to manage.
