DSWD links PHP20/kg rice sale to 'Walang Gutom Program'

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is incorporating the sale of PHP20 per kilogram rice into its 'Walang Gutom Program' (WGP) to enhance food accessibility for impoverished families.

This initiative, announced by Social Welfare Secretary Rex Gatchalian, aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s call for inter-agency collaboration.

Gatchalian has coordinated with Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. to secure the supply of this affordably priced rice for WGP-accredited retailers.

These retailers, which include Kadiwa outlets and small agri-cooperatives, are also where WGP beneficiaries currently use their food credits.

The goal is to allow beneficiaries to purchase more food with their existing credits by making rice more affordable.

The DSWD has provided the Department of Agriculture (DA) with a list of approximately 1,000 accredited retailers to commence the program's implementation.

The 'Walang Gutom 2027: Food Stamp Program', established in July 2023, aims to eradicate hunger among 750,000 food-poor families by the year 2027.

Program beneficiaries are provided with monthly food credits and participate in nutrition education sessions.
