DSWD distributes aid to Oriental Mindoro families affected by oil spill

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has started distributing aid to families affected by the oil spill from the sunken motor tanker MT Princess Empress in Oriental Mindoro.

Secretary Rex Gatchalian personally led the distribution of assistance, which includes family food packs for over 7,000 affected families across six municipalities.

The DSWD has pre-positioned over P78.9 million in standby funds and food packs, and anticipates the number of affected families to increase to 10,000.

A cash-for-work program will also be conducted to help residents recover from the incident.

The MT Princess Empress sank with 800,000 liters of industrial fuel oil off Naujan, Oriental Mindoro.

Marine experts estimate that over 36,000 hectares of coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrass may be affected by the oil spill.

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) advised residents from four municipalities to avoid fishing activities due to possible oil hazards.
