DOH issues health advisories amid Taal ashfall threat

The Department of Health (DOH) issued health advisories to manage risks from Taal Volcano's ashfall after Phivolcs raised the alert to Level 4.

DOH warned that exposure to volcanic ash can cause throat and eye irritation, coughing, bronchitis-like illness, and breathing discomfort, with pre-existing respiratory conditions making individuals particularly vulnerable.

Residents of Taal Volcano Island and nearby barangays in Agoncillo and Laurel, Batangas, were urged to evacuate immediately, and Batangas was placed under a state of calamity.

The public was reminded to minimize outdoor activities, keep doors and windows shut, and use dust masks and eye protection if venturing outside.

The DOH recommended the use of N95 masks for protection, to turn off air conditioning and fears, and to clear ash from roofs to prevent collapse.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque III advised those evacuating to exercise caution when driving in low visibility.

DOH Calabarzon has been placed on full alert, with health facilities readied and emergency personnel, including mental health teams, deployed to provide immediate medical and health services.

The DOH anew reminded the public to cover their noses and mouths with dust masks to avoid asthma triggers and other respiratory diseases, advising N95 masks for areas with thick ashfall and surgical masks or cloth for areas with less ashfall.

Volcanic ashes can also harm the eyes, and the public was advised to remain indoors, avoid going outdoors unless during emergencies, wear eyeglasses and goggles to protect the eyes, and avoid wearing contact lenses.

In case of eye irritation, the DOH reminded the public to refrain from rubbing their eyes and to wash them with clean water, and persistent eye and respiratory problems must be consulted with health specialists.
