DOH: Fireworks injuries down 14% but road crash injuries up 100%

The Department of Health (DOH) reported a 14% decrease in fireworks-related injuries during the 2025 holiday season compared to the previous year, but a concerning 100% increase in road crash injuries.

A total of 720 fireworks injuries were recorded from December 21, 2025, to January 5, 2026, with common culprits including kwitis, 5-star, whistle bomb, boga, and piccolo.

In contrast, road crash injuries surged to 1,384 during the same period, a doubling from the 690 injuries reported in the prior year.

A significant portion, 47%, of these road crash injuries involved young individuals aged 15 to 29.

The DOH also reported ten deaths, seven of which were motorcycle riders, with six not wearing helmets, and three pedestrian fatalities.

Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa declared both fireworks incidents and road crashes as public health problems requiring urgent attention.
