DOH deploys medical team to Myanmar after earthquake

The Department of Health (DOH) has deployed a Philippine Emergency Medical Assistance Team (PEMAT) to Myanmar following a magnitude 7.7 earthquake.

The team, comprising doctors, nurses, medical technologists, pharmacists, midwives, and other healthcare professionals, was dispatched on Tuesday, April 1, aboard a C-130 aircraft.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes PEMAT as capable of operating outpatient services in temporary health tents or facilities during disasters.

They will spend 18 days in Myanmar delivering medical aid to earthquake survivors, with their specific deployment location to be determined by Myanmar's authorities.

The deployed PEMAT is equipped to provide services including acute medical care, life support, trauma management, pharmaceutical supplies, isolation facilities, referral services, pediatric care, minor surgeries, and psychosocial support.

This deployment is part of the Philippine Inter-Agency Humanitarian Contingent (PIAHC) to Myanmar, led by the Office of Civil Defense (OCD).

The earthquake has claimed over 2,000 lives in Myanmar.
