DILG Sec. Año says ECQ extension until April 30 needed to curb COVID-19 spread

DILG Secretary Eduardo Año stated that the extension of the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) until April 30, 2020, is a necessary measure to contain the spread of COVID-19, based on the advice of health experts.

Año emphasized that rushing the easing of restrictions would be a gamble, and the government is committed to flattening the COVID-19 transmission curve.

He explained that models from both government and private sectors indicate that a two-week extension is crucial for managing the pandemic within the healthcare system's capacity.

The DILG is working diligently to ensure all necessary mechanisms and protocols are in place to prevent further transmission during the extended quarantine period.

Año urged local government units (LGUs) to cooperate with national directives and to implement strict measures like physical distancing and mask-wearing.

He also stressed the importance of ensuring proper and timely distribution of aid to poor families and securing/sanitizing community quarantine facilities.
