DILG chief orders security prep for Labor Day protests

Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Benjamin "Benhur" Abalos Jr. has directed local government units (LGUs) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) to prepare for potential security issues related to Labor Day protests on May 1.

Abalos emphasized the need to ensure public safety and maintain peace and order during the planned rallies and demonstrations.

He specifically instructed Metro Manila LGUs and their police forces to be ready for any eventuality, citing past Labor Day celebrations where militant groups often converged on major roads.

Abalos called for a discussion between the Regional Peace and Order Council (RPOC)-NCR and the PNP to establish necessary security measures for the event.

A sizable security contingent is to be deployed in known convergence areas, while police security forces are to strictly observe the policy of maximum tolerance.

Local chief executives in Metro Manila and the PNP leadership were urged to implement a strategic plan covering traffic management, civil disturbance management, anti-criminality, counter-terrorism, and emergency response.
