DFA: 47,000 OFWs stranded in Middle East awaiting repatriation

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) reports that approximately 47,000 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) remain stranded in the Middle East and are awaiting repatriation due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

DFA Undersecretary Sarah Lou Arriola stated that the agency is awaiting a Special Allotment Release Order (SARO) to resume repatriation flights.

The DFA has already chartered 57 flights using its Assistance to Nationals (ATN) fund and is grateful for the P820 million allocated for assisting overseas Filipinos under the Bayanihan to Recover as One Act.

The department is also addressing financial obligations required by employers of stranded OFWs to facilitate their return.

Arriola noted that the global health crisis has led to increased job losses and undocumented status among Filipinos abroad.
