DFA repatriates 205,000 Filipinos amid pandemic

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has repatriated a total of 205,000 distressed Filipinos amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

This figure is double the number of Filipinos who usually return to the country in a regular year and is the biggest repatriation effort in decades.

Of the total repatriated individuals, 135,004 were land-based workers and 69,477 were sea-based workers.

More than 40,000 Filipinos were repatriated in September alone, with the majority coming from the Middle East.

The government shoulders the complete cost of repatriation, and the DFA is awaiting additional funds under the Bayanihan to Recover as One Act.

The DFA expects to repatriate an additional 150,000 Filipinos.
