The Department of Agriculture (DA) announced that there will be no significant increase in the price of rice, even with the current import ban which began on September 1.
DA spokesperson Assistant Secretary Arnel de Mesa stated that the country has a high rice inventory, with 2.8 million metric tons of imported rice already arriving since January, according to the Bureau of Plant Industry.
He noted that prices of imported rice remain stable, ranging from P42 to P45 per kilo, which is within the suggested retail price of around P43 per kilo.
Additionally, there are still expected rice import arrivals for November to December, and local palay production reached a historic high of 9.08 million metric tons during the first half of 2025.
The DA expects a good harvest in the current season, ensuring a stable rice supply.
Four ports have been designated to accept rice imports for containers exported by August 31 and arriving between September 1 to September 15: Manila, Davao, Cagayan de Oro, and Cebu.
Japonica, Basmati, and Glutinous rice are also exempted from the import ban.
