DA OKs first bird flu vaccine Volvac B.E.S.T. AI plus ND

The Department of Agriculture (DA) is set to bolster the poultry sector and ensure food security with the country's first bird flu vaccine, Volvac B.E.S.T. AI plus ND, which has received commercial approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. stated that the vaccine provides a strong defense against the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 subtype and velogenic Newcastle disease, which threaten both food security and human health.

The vaccine can be administered to birds at 10 days old, developing immunity within two weeks against these diseases.

Industry groups, including the Philippine Egg Board Association and the United Broiler Raisers' Association, welcomed the vaccine as a significant breakthrough for poultry raisers, noting it would also minimize red tape.

Poultry output, including eggs, was valued at PHP362 billion in 2024, highlighting the economic importance of protecting the sector.
