Comelec to start barangay, SK polls preparations in June

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) will commence preparations in June for the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections scheduled for December.

Poll Commissioner George Garcia stated that preparations will proceed despite discussions of postponement, as no law has been enacted to reset the polls.

He emphasized that Comelec cannot presume Congress will not proceed with the elections and they must prepare, as it would be difficult to start preparations late if the elections are pushed through.

Garcia had earlier echoed the take of House Majority Leader Ferdinand Martin Romualdez that a postponement could generate over P8 billion in savings.

Romualdez suggested these funds could instead be allocated for the COVID-19 response, economic stimulus, and aid for pandemic victims.

Comelec Acting Spokesperson Rex John Rex C. Laudiangco emphasized that preparations will continue until a law officially postpones or reschedules the elections.
