Comelec to issue show-cause order vs businessman over P30M donation to Escudero campaign

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) will issue a show-cause order against businessman Lawrence Lubiano for admitting to donating P30 million to Senator Chiz Escudero's 2022 campaign.

This is being investigated because Section 95 (c) of the Omnibus Election Code prohibits contractors with government contracts from making campaign donations.

Comelec Chairperson George Garcia confirmed that Lubiano will be asked to explain why he should not be charged with an election offense.

Escudero will also be required to submit an explanation as the poll body probes 52 construction firms suspected of bankrolling at least 26 candidates in the past election.

The Comelec has requested the Department of Public Works and Highways to certify if these 52 firms are indeed government contractors.

Violators of the prohibition against contractor donations face up to six years in prison and perpetual disqualification from holding public office.
