Comelec to issue show-cause orders to 27 govt contractors for alleged illegal poll donations

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is preparing to issue show-cause orders to 27 government contractors suspected of making illegal campaign donations during the 2022 elections.

Comelec Chairman George Garcia confirmed that the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) provided a certification identifying these firms.

Of the 54 contractors investigated, the DPWH stated that 27 are subject to the prohibition under the Omnibus Election Code.

The commission is currently verifying which candidates received donations from these contractors and will require them to explain.

Garcia clarified that Lawrence Lubiano, who admitted to contributing P30 million to Sen. Chiz Escudero's campaign, was not included in the DPWH certification as he is not a corporation.
