Comelec denies call to extend voting hours

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has decided against extending voting hours for the May 9 elections beyond 7 p.m., despite calls for an extension.

Comelec Commissioner George Garcia stated that nationwide extension is not justified, citing minimal power outages that were quickly resolved.

Voters within 30 meters of a polling place by 7 p.m. will still be allowed to cast their votes, with assurance that voting will continue until all are accommodated.

Despite reports of some precincts not opening on time and approximately 143 VCMs being replaced due to defects, Comelec maintains that these are isolated incidents.

As of 10 a.m. on election day, at least 1,867 VCM glitches were reported to have been resolved.
